The 3 Ways of Making Skype Calls

By , About.com Guide

For the title, I was hesitating between the one above and 'The 2 Ways of Paying for Skype'. One of the three is free, so we are left with only two ways of paying for Skype calls. I don't want to write only about paying, because Skype pretty much owes its success to the free service it offers. So here you go:
  1. Pay nothing. Free. Gratis. This is only possible if on the one side, you use a computer or a mobile phone, and on the other your correspondent uses another computer or a mobile phone. And you both need to be using Skype itself. This service, along with the video conferencing service, is as free as the air, there isn't even a fair usage policy.
  2. Pay as you go. In our context, it is rather pay as you call. For this, you need to have some credit, enough to cover your call at the Skype rates. You can pay for the credit any time you want and make calls any time you want, as long as you have the credit. This is SkypeOut.
  3. Pay monthly subscription. You pay a monthly flat rate for your subscription. This entitles you, depending on the plan you chose, to a threshold of calling time for the month, or to unlimited calling. Read more on Skype's subscription plans.
