Top 4 Phone Adapters (ATAs)

An ATA (Analog Telephone Adapter) is important for VoIP connection if you don't want to buy expensive IP phones. It acts as an interface between your existing phone (or IP-enabled phone) and your Internet connection router or modem. Here is my top list:

1. Linksys PAP2 Phone Adapter

The Linksys PAP2 Phone Adapter is a cheap ATA that is perfectly suited for home use. It is already configured to be used with Vonage. You can of course use it with other providers after some tweaks, with are rather technical. The quality is good and it gives a lot of features. It is compatible with many other devices and is rather like plug-and-play. I have put it in the first position in this because of its low price and ease of use, which makes of it the choice of most users.

4. Cisco ATA-186

The Cisco ATA-186 is a powerful adapter with great performance. It is better suited for corporate networks, since it does not plug directly into a service provider's hardware. You need an PBX in between. It has one LAN port and 2 FXS ports for connecting analogue phones. It support many codecs and protocols and offers many features. You can configure it using a handset. As is the case with Cisco equipment, it works best with other Cisco built hardware.
