New SIP-Based Application for the iPhone
Thursday May 21, 2009
Media5 Corporation announced the future launching, somewhere in July, of its new SIP-based softphone application called the Media5-Fone. There are a number of such phones out there, characterized by the fact that they are not offered by and hence do not depend on one particular VoIP service provider. They can be used as generic clients to make and receive VoIP phone calls through any supported service. The product looks alluring with Wi-Fi support, full SIP compliance, voicemail integration and many other features.
The difference with Media5-Fone is that it is for the iPhone, that is it will run on an Apple platform, something that is somewhat rare. Counterpath's X-Lite and Eyebeam are great solutions for Windows and Mac systems, but without fully independent mobile support. Now, what I see (and also hope) coming is either Media5 or Counterpath or their likes producing a full-fledged SIP client for Windows Mobile - Nokia N97 is coming soon to challenge the iPhone - and Symbian.

Funny you should mention Windows Mobile and Symbian. Since well before the N97 and its integrated Skype client, Nokia has had a SIP-compliant VoIP client in a slew of Symbian-based smartphones. To a lesser extent to same applies to Windows Mobile, which includes a VoIP client, although it’s up to the handset manufacturers to put in or leave it out. Alas, the latter is more common than the former, but a savvy user can install the Windows Mobile client manually. These integrated clients can’t be beat by 3rd-parties when it comes to usability and battery life, so why reinvent the wheel?
MailVision Ltd ( http://www.mailvision.com ) was demoing its SIP client for mobile devices last Thursday ( May 21 ) at the HD VoIP Summit in NY.
MailVision has SIP clients for Nokia ( Symbian ), Windows Mobile, iPhone / iPod Touch and PC.
At the summit, MailVision shows the new versions that are HD enabled running Wide Band codecs.
Rumors that Media5 will launch also Symbian S60 3rd and 5th edition version very soon. It is very possible since they own and control their technology that is fully portable. It is the same SIP Client SDK engine that is being used by Mediatrix gateways.
iPico, MailVision’s SIP CLient for iPhone and iPod Touch 2nd generation is ready on the App Store. You can download it at:
If I can downlod the client I will be thankfull to you
