Magic Jack

I've had Magic Jack for a year and a half and was very pleased with it for the first year. I've been pestering them for a local phone number so friends in the area would not be charged a toll call when they call me. No luck so far. Recent problems - no longer able to dial from handset and poor sound quality, have yet to be resolved. I was offered a replacement Jack (I'd only have to cover postage), but don't know if it would resolve the problems. Has anyone else had similar difficulties?

Fonality

Awful! We are currently trying to set up for our business. The phones were not shipped when said (10 days late and only because I called to see where they were), their customer service is awful-- I have calls in to multiple people and no responses, and the phones they sent do not meet the needs we have and discussed. I feel like they are helpful and friendly until the sale is made and then they are impossible to get a hold of. I am very disappointed and I haven't even plugged them in yet.

Vonage Doesn't Deliiver the goods...

But they will take you for a ride. That was my experience with them almost a year ago. The cost is high, because you will have to have high-speed internet to connect to the service in addition to their fee. With VOIP you may also need to increase your plan with your ISP (particularly if they have some sort of CAP or already use your bandwidth to do things like VPN or uploads). The service with Vonage in particular had huge performance lags, snaps and crackle even after I increase my bandwidth and optimized my router. I cancelled Vonage and returned their adapter within the 14 days, but they said they didn't receive the router for 1.5 months. UPS had it delivered, I had already closed the CC they had on file, so when they tried to contact me. I told them to get their act together. Tried a friends VOIP adapter with another company and had absolutely no problems. Now I just use Google Voice and a cheap $20/mo land line with no out-dialing allowed.

Fees - Total Costs

I really would like to see a comparison that included 'hidden fees'. I've been with Vonage for 6 years, but I am getting tired of them charging the same stupid fees the landline guys have been doing. From $16 total bill to now $26 total bill, only $18 of which is the service itself, up from $14 for 500 minutes. I'd like to know what these other providers charge besides their service.

Business Owner

I have installed FreedomIQ at over 50 companies since our first in October 2008. It is the best service I have seen in the Hosted IP Phone Marketplace. The service is reliable, the features are compelling and the company LISTENS to us when we want something special. Keep up the good work, FreedomIQ!!

Check ooma for free to cheap

If you're already paying for broadband service, you should definitely check out ooma. They have a compelling NO MONTHLY FEE option, or a fully loaded premium that's still cheaper than the competition. And calls are exceptionally clear! I've seen these guys at CES the past few years and finally broke down and got their unit. These guys know what they're doing.

Packet8

I have used Packet8 (8x8, Inc.) since July, 2005 and been pleased. It isn't perfect, but their customer service is excellent: a 2-level telephone tree gets you to a person who speaks American english, and the background music is classical.

talktt.com

I strongly recommend adding another one into the list, talktt.com, much cheaper and very good quality. It supports calls directly from web site or from your any SIP device. cool one.

MagicJack

I've had magicjack for 2 years... It works for me, but other maybe not...I say this because it is not the most dependable, sometimes the phone cuts out. You also have to be pretty computer savvy. The customer service is only online, but are very responsive and are there to help...if they can! But for 19.95 a YEAR it is very worth every penny.

Vonage charging for getting it wrong...

Go figure! Vonage is charging me for getting it wrong. This company is CRIMINAL!!! For weeks on end they have NOT transferred the phone number for one of my lines and they make excuses after excuses as to why the phone number is NOT transferred ONLY to impede an impending lawsuit. Vonage MUST either get it right or for 'God sake' go OUT of business. This company is PATHETIC... it really is!!! Oh my God. Can anyone PLEASE recommend a company with an EXCELLENT International Calling Plan as I make countless international calls so that I can CANCEL Vonage junk service ASAP!!! ? ? ? PLEASE anyone and everyone, Vonage MUST go AWAY! They MUST!! They are a HORROR SHOW!!! HORROR!!!

Vonage Sucks Donkey

I had similar experience w/vonage. Avoid this company like the plague.

Just stay away from BROADVOICE,

PhonePower, and VYL Media and you'll be OK!!! There has to be one exceptionally excellent VoIP Provider... there has to be. Which one is it among countless USELESS providers seeing only $$$$ signs and looking to exploit the CONSUMER! How can one secure a VoIP Service Provider that was as EXCELLENT as AT&T's Call Vantage? What a pity the AT&T management ruined that service. Authentically, they were the BEST!!! Amazing service! Amazing line quality! Amazing call termination! BEST regards to everyone posting!

This LIST is NOT accurate!!!

1sty BroadVoice is the WORSE and then Phone Power is the next WORSE. Why? BroadVoice bills their customers on BOGUS charges. Phone Power disconnects the service of their client when you complain that the so call Tech Department Supervisor is INCOMPETENT! Go figure. The BEST VoIP service I ever had is with AT&T Call Vantage. AT&T made a HUGE mistake when they STOPPED allowing calls to be made from outside of the United States; very unfortunate! Had they NOT done that, I would still be their customer. Ever since I left AT&T, it has been HELL, yes it has... hell! It is extremely difficult to have find a good VoIP provider. BroadVoice would have been good if they were so busy attempting to EXTORT money from their customers. The Worse companies for VoiP are 1.) BroadVoice, 2.) Phone Power, 3.) VYL Media. VYLMedia has severe management problems that affect their customers. Also very, very, very poor unworking call terminations issues; DISASTER!!!

Vintalk?

Vintalk powered by Vinculum Communications Inc provides excellent service, responsive customer care and great pricing on both SIP Trunks and Hosted IP PBX. Client testimonials include the National Head Start Association and Powergenix.

Talkety - Useless!

I have tried Talkety with two cellphone numbers. One isn't recognized by their system and no calls can be connected. The other has never connected a call for more than a few seconds - usually not long enough to even hear a dial tone. I have emailed their support three times and after five weeks haven't had a reply yet. Frustrating waste of time and money. By the way, I then tried Voipcheap, which works perfectly, and also has cheaper rates than Talkety.
