"Telemarketer Blocking"

By Nadeem Unuth, About.com

Definition:

A telemarketer is someone that calls you to sell something. Most of the time, this call comes at a time when you least want to hear the phone ring: after a hard day's work, waiting for dinner to be served. The telemarketer blocking feature allows your phone service to automatically disconnect the line whenever a telemarketer tries to reach you. It is not possible to use the call blocking feature here because you can't know what the number of the calling telemarketer is. Telemarketer blocking works in a different way.

Telemarketers use a machine which automatically dials every number in the phone directory, which include yours. Being machines, these computers dial faster than the operators can have time to make a sales pitch. This is the reason why you often hear a silence of a few seconds when taking telemarketer calls. These auto-dialing computers listen to a special tone from your phone to know whether it is in service or not. The telemarketer blocking feature detects telemarketer calls through this few-seconds silence, and in return, sends a tone fooling the dialler into believing that your phone is out of service. Thus, the dialer disconnects from your line to move to the next number in their list, and your phone does not even ring!
