Device Based VoIP Services

By , About.com Guide

Description:
Basically, the only cost is the price of the hardware. It works with any normal phone, so you can use your existing phone with the service. Now, there are some differing flavors between the few providers out there. Ooma is simple: you buy the device and you use the service for ever, without paying a dime. The device is quite expensive though. MagicJack offers its device for cheap (around ten times cheaper than what ooma claims), but you have to pay a small amount of money every year. PhoneGnome, the oldest of these services around, has got a box like ooma for four times less, but with some limitations.
Typical users:
Users who don't want to receive and pay monthly bills.
Pros:
  • No monthly bills.
  • Can be used in different places.
Cons:
  • The price of the hardware is high for ooma.
  • Requires a traditional phone line.
  • MagicJack requires a PC to work.
