What are Calling Cards?

By , About.com Guide

Definition:

A calling card is a service that allows you to make phone calls through prepaid credit. It does not necessarily involve buying a card, though in many cases, the service does start with the purchase of a card. The card grants you credit to make phone calls.

There are basically two types of calling cards: Pay-as-you-go mobile cards and long distance calling cards.

The pay-as-you-go card is a simple card that you buy from your cellular service provider. It carries a unique number that you enter into your mobile phone and dial. This feeds calling credit upfront into your account, which you can use up to make local (and by extension) international calls through your mobile phone. OK, most people in the world know this.

The other type of calling cards is that for international long distance calls. When you buy the credit, which carries a credit amount, you register the card with the service provider through an initial code with a code. Then you can use that code and your contact’s number to make international calls using any phone, landline or mobile.

Long distance calling cards carry the advantage of allowing you to make international calls for much cheaper than with traditional calling methods. In fact, most of these services use VoIP technology to offer the service. This also allows them to offer a certain number of minutes for free upfront.
