If only a provider could allow unlimited mobile calls without a monthly bill or without prepaid credit. That's nothing near possible soon, as not even Ooma can do it. The no-monthly bill company has launched its mobile application for people to use its service on the go. This definitely allows you to save a lot of money on local (US) and international mobile calls, but other mobile VoIP services might be better, because there are restrictions.
First, the mobile service is open only for Ooma subscribers, i.e. people who have an Ooma device and scout. If you are not one of them, you might not want to read on, and will want to consider some other mobile VoIP service. But you might want to look elsewhere also if you don't have an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad and don't plan to acquire one. The mobile service is only for these devices so far. And then of course, forget about it if you aren't a US resident.
This said, assuming you are an Ooma subscriber with one of Apple's mobile devices (since you are still reading), the service can be just quite helpful. The softphone application costs $10 to acquire and each local US call costs less than 2 dollar cents. No GSM cost involved, great, but provided you are under a Wi-Fi hotspot or are subscribed to a 3G data plan. Wi-Fi limits mobility and 3G increases the cost. But you could be better off if you are a Premium Ooma user as you will get some hours of free calling; or if you are subscribed to Ooma's international service, where you can get free hours to call 70 countries. Read more on these details on Ooma's mobile FAQ page. You can download the application from iTunes' Ooma page.
