Google Voice Goes VoIP by Acquiring Gizmo5

So far, Google Voice has only been a service offering phone numbers that can ring several phones, forwarding of voicemail as text and some other features. It finally isn't a VoIP service. This is about to change since Google confirmed it is acquiring Gizmo5, which is fully VoIP-based.

This acquisition will allow Google Voice to pose as a competitor to services like Skype by offering free Internet-based international calls and cheap calls to and from phones. Stay tuned on what Google will propose soon.

That is going to be an interesting service, I bet google will integrate it with some of it’s other gadgets.

Thanks for the news. I am hoping that they will open up google voice soon. I already have the app installed on my droid, just waiting for an invite.

Google Voice has been great until a month ago. It seems either the 1.6 OTA update or Google Voice App failed to work. I have it installed on my Tmobile G1 but it wasn’t working on my MOTO Droid. I really hope this addition will help to smooth flaws with Google Voice and enable easier placing of outgoing calls? I love the messages sent of what the caller said and if they talk clearly the transcription is almost perfect, Number portability seems a problem. I changed carriers and new area code wouldn’t work, but I hear good things about Gizmo 5.
