Skype and BlackBerry

Thursday June 18, 2009
"We have heard loud and clear that our users want Skype on whichever smartphone they choose to use, " says Scott Durchslag, COO of Skype. Blackberry users are becoming quite fond of Voice over IP, mostly since it allows them to save tremendously on mobile calls, and maybe partly because of Obama's attachment to his own RIM machine. Tons of Blackberry users have requested to have Skype on their phones. There has been a release on skype.com anoouncing a Skype lite client for BlackBerry by the end of May, but so far, nothing has happened. It might be that the product is still under construction. Meanwhile, there are many other tools that can allow you to make free or cheap calls on your BlackBerry through VoIP.

I find it interesting that as a Blackberry Bold user, I read lots of articles about Skype for my phone. However, whenever I click the link to download, it’s not for the Blackberry. I thought you might be different, but alas, no.

I find it ridiculous that they are developing skype not to work with wifi. This is the main cost savings when travelling hit a hotspot and use skype. Otherwise expensive foreign data charges. might aswell just use your mobile. somebody is trying not to tread on the mobile carriers toes.
best of luck skype.

(5) Alex says:

Yeah, right! Yet another blog about how soon there will be a Skype Lite for BB.
We just need to repeat it every month, some day it will be true.
I think this is rubbish. Yes, there was a call for beta testers on the skype lite forum for Bold owners. However, that was all, and the suggested release date passed by, and NO update at all.

So maybe someone is just spreading hot air, according to “all news are good news”.

for the time i continue to travel with two cellular my BB Bold for the G3+ traffic which i like for the quality of its display and the safety of the system, and a nokia E51 for the use of Skype. Whenever I can connect to a WiFi I enjoy browsing, chatting and free talks with my buddies. The Nokia is very sensitive and can get connected with a poor signal, much better than iPhone/iPod, not to mention samsung or lg

(10) Andy says:

I agree. My pals on tour with me are using skype on their iphones to call home from Europe using available wi-fi networks. I, on the other hand, am paying EXHORBITANT roaming fees (in excess of 1000 euro per month) to make the same calls. If a BB version of Skype isn’t out soon for use on wifi networks, I’m going to toss the Blackberry Bold and pick up an iphone s.

Skype caved like everybody else did in writing apps for the battery eater Iphone. I have contacted Skype and they don’t have a clu when and IF it will ever happen for the Blackberry Phone.

Again, on 3/31/09 Skype said:
“Skype today announced that the lite version of Skype™, a ‘thin’ Skype client for mobile phones, will soon be available as a free download for BlackBerry® smartphones…The beta of the lite version of Skype will be available as a free download to BlackBerry smartphone users beginning in May..”

If they’re having trouble developing this app..pls give me a ring. Let just get an official bb skype app out already!

(13) BillySpleen says:

Still no Skype client for BB’s. You think that Skype would want the business and RIM would realise that they are getting their behinds kicked by the iPhone.

(14) Boris Wade says:

Skype lite not coming to Blackberry now means that our company will
now be using iPhones as of next year! All the best apps are coming out
for the iPhones – as much as I lone my Blackberry Bold I am the poor loser
when it comes to apps!

The wait for skype for blackberry is ridiculous. We are also moving our business phones (several hundred of them) to iphone due to the better support for applications and more timely release of software.

I was tired to wait for skype so I use VoipBuster Blackberry SMS. You can send SMS over internet easily

Did they actually say May 2009? Maybe they meant May 2010 or 2011?

(18) Steve says:

All we need to do is get Bill to design software and a pocket PC with a voice, sound and wi fi capability. {4 G} Wala there you have it, download Skype, and no more 200.00 dollar cell phone bills. All you need is an internet connection which is affordable and much more useful than a cell. The cell phone companies are out of control they need to be stopped. It is absolutely insane the way they have made the public believe that they can’t function without a cell!!!

(19) Jules says:

Meanwhile, waiting……waiting……What is Skype doing? Annoucing in May 2009 that it will be released soon for the Blackberry. Today, November 14 2009, I’m still looking at this same announcement. What a shame SKYPE.
Delete your information or release it ASAP.
Maybe RIM can bring some more pressure. I am thinking to buy a iPhone so I can use Skype, reducing my costs tremendously.
