VoIP on Facebook - Is it Worth?

Thursday June 11, 2009
Some call facebook the hottest place on the net. Now you define hot. Anyhow, it attracts millions and I know most of you have a profile there. Although VoIP is like the tomato that colors any sauce, it hasn't been that tasty in facebook sauce. Text reigns on facebook, but it is a multimedia site altogether. Voice cannot be absent, and most people do talk on facebook, but not really inside facebook. It's simply that numbers are shared and phones or VoIP applications do the rest of the work, not integrated in facebook.com.

Now is it worth integrating VoIP in facebook? When I speak of integration, I think of being able to make calls directly within your profile, without actually requiring a softphone, and most importantly without having to pay, like a Yahoo! voice chat. Back in 2007, many applications and services emerged to conquer facebook by voice. Among the first ones was iotum, with its Calliflower. Then came Truphone, whose seems to have disappeared therefrom. And others like Telephone, Let's Talk, TringMe, YeigoMe, Chatterbox, Getabuz, Snapvine, MyPhone, Call Me in Skype, etc. Some of these are still around, but without much noise in the surrounding. What happened?

I think people find it simply not that thrilling. The one advantage I can think of, for having a 'call me' click-to-call link on your profile, is to actually hide your real number from strangers. Else, it is so easy to just dump your list of IM usernames and let people call you. You can still try. Calliflower gives some explanation of how to use its 'free conference calls' application on facebook there.

Have your say on this.
