Some of the residential/business VoIP service providers provide, among their features, a fax line that can be used to send and receive fax through their VoIP facilities. I checked the features for the residential VoIP services on my list, and three of them offer IP faxing as a feature. Vonage offers a limited free fax service to its business users, and residential users pay $10 monthly for the new line. The rate is the same with Viatalk, while voip.com charges half the price for less minutes. On the software side, VoxOx, in its determination to really unify everything (hats off to them for that), will be offering free incoming and cheap outgoing fax service soon. No additional line is required - the fax comes through the single user number each user gets at registration.
It seems that it will only be a matter of time before IP Faxing becomes and integral part of VoIP, as a feature. I am seeing Skype with fax in the future. Not you? And then later the ability to send and receive fax messages from your Blackberry and other mobile handsets.
