Skype Mobile Calls for Free on 3 Through SIM Card

Friday May 1, 2009
And for $3, to make it rhyme. UK phone company 3 has partnered with Skype to offer 3 users (see no numerical value here, it means users of '3') in the UK free Skype calls through their mobile phones both locally and worldwide. Note that the calls are free only when calling other Skype users. The only thing to be done to get started is to buy a 3 SIM card for $3 (symbolic price?) and use it whenever there is coverage of the 3 network.

The big deal here is that you don't need to have a Wi-Fi or 3G connection, which besides being geographically quite restricted, is often not free - not to say expensive, especially if you are, like most of us out there, after free stuff. This could mean that you can make mobile calls just anywhere under the British sky, with no paying at all if all your contacts are on Skype. One dark spot still remains - your phone's compatibility. As at today, the launching date of the service, only the 3 Skypephone is supported, but 3 promises other mobile handsets and phones will be supported in the near future. To see if your phone goes in, check it there, and read more on the new service from 3 there.

Everywhere it says you can “make” skype calls, but can you receive them as well? I mean if you install skype on your mobile, are you always connected or available to receive any call?
