Will WiBro Dominate Wireless 2009?

Some time back, I subscribed to a new wireless broadband service using WiMax technology. It would have been perfect (it is portable and it is cheap) if it worked, but it didn't. Quality suffered. I don't blame it on the technology as on the provider who I suspect didn't care to invest enough. This is because I still believe in the technology and what will be its derivative in the near future. Put simply, WiMax (IEEE 802.16e) is like Wi-Fi without the short distance limitation. It is the WAN version of a wireless LAN. Actually, this is what we need.

Now why is WiBro mentioned in the title? WiBro is the Korean 'bro' of WiMax. It is a Korean implementation of WiMax. WiBro stands for wireless broadband (nothing to do with brotherhood). South Korea is a leader in wireless penetration and government, through the Korean Communication Commission, is supporting the project for 2009. And I have reasons to believe that WiBro will be more successful than Intel Corp's WiMax. The perspectives are captivating - cheaper communication and greater mobility, especially with VoIP. Imagine being able to make calls everywhere, like in a cellular network, but without paying for the calls. On the device side, Samsung has already released its first WiBro handset, the H1000. Look out for WiBro in 2009. OK maybe I am being too zealous; let's hope it comes.
