100+ Security Holes Discovered in Cisco, Avaya and Nortel VoIP Systems
Thursday April 3, 2008
'Think your VoIP is secure? Think again,' goes the slogan on the VoIPshield site. VoIPshield, a leading provider of VoIP security products, has discovered more than a hundred security flaws in Cisco, Avaya and Nortel systems. Among the threats are denial-of-service attacks, harvesting of customer data, recording of conversations and breaking into voice mailboxes. Read more on this here and here.
The question whether this finding is 'outrageous' is debatable. While at face value, it is hard to accept that record-breaking number of threats in VoIP systems from the leaders in the market, on the other hand, there might (who knows?) be commercial interests behind the discovery; and then since VoIP is somewhat still in its early days as far as security is concerned, VoIPShield Columbus might just have landed on threat land. I believe that finally discoveries of this type does good to the industry, and shows signs of its well being. At least we are seeing the bull's horns. What comes next is how to grab them.
