Will VoIP Beat The Conventional Phone?

Thursday March 13, 2008
If you have a look at the various advantages VoIP offers, and at the many service providers and applications cropping up like mushrooms, you will logically already see a dominant VoIP in the future. But then, statistics in Europe underline the difference between what they call 'the hype and the reality'! As the International Herald Tribune puts it, VoIP pains to find its place as a main player in the the communication arena. This is in Europe, which, mathematically speaking, has seen greater VoIP adoption than the US.

What could be the reasons for that and what does this indicate? The best case would be that VoIP is just taking its time to ripen; given that telephone companies that have invested so much on network coverage and materials will do everything they can to save their market and survive. But what about the worst case - that people aren't seeing the future with VoIP? Call quality, security, and the other limitations of VoIP blocks the market, but I believe people's ignorance of the technology contributes a lot to that as well. Article.
