711 - Phone Service For The Disabled Extended To VoIP

By , About.com GuideJuly 8, 2007

Follow me on:

Back in 2001, the FCC decreed 711 to be the number for TRS (Telecommunications Relay Service), which allows persons with a hearing or speech impairment to make phone calls via text telephones or other devices.

Today with VoIP prominently on stage, VoIP service providers are required by recent FCC regulations to provide 711 support for deaf or speech-handicapped persons. This would apply to service providers as well as hardware manufacturers. Article
