Take VoIP as a Teaching Aid

Friday June 2, 2006

“Modernize education. Use IT as a teaching aid.” That's something you hear very often when you lecture and teach. If you are a teacher, lecturer or tutor, and if your school, college or university has the necessary equipment, then VoIP can help you a lot. When I say equipment, I mean a server (which is available in nearly all universities and high schools worldwide), and the cheap-and-easy equipment used for recording voice and podcasting.

Your students may download your lectures and listen to them on PC, cell phone or MP3 players. They can even attend your lectures while being absent! Do it real time and they'll be happy.

What about interaction? What if they have questions? Well, your students might not be adequately equipped for interaction; else it would be a straight video-conferencing session. They can ask their questions via cell phone text messages and receive the answers on your blog. Dr. Bill Ashraf, a lecturer, is doing this and making many people very happy at Bradford University in England. If you are a student, then you can maybe drop this idea into your lecturer’s ears.
